Biology (222)    1 credit Science

  • Prerequisite(s):  Successful completion of Earth-Space Science and recommendation of current science instructor

In this laboratory course, students study ecology, simple biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, evolution, comparative anatomy, physiology, and a survey of the kingdom of life. Students engage in laboratory investigations, fieldwork, outside reading, and class discussion. Observation of the natural world, collection and analysis of data, development of logical thinking processes, and science writing skills are emphasized.

Applied Physics includes general physics concepts and its relationship to the world around us. Students participate in laboratory investigations and projects to help solidify their understanding of basic physical science concepts.

  • Prerequisite(s): Minimum grade of 70 in Algebra I, Earth-Space Science, and Biology, and recommendation of current science instructor

This science laboratory course prepares the student for further science study at the postsecondary school level and is considered to be a College Preparatory course. Students engage in frequent laboratory investigations and group problem solving workshops that apply and solidify concepts learned in the class. Topics covered in the course include atomic structure, the periodic table, chemical formulas and compounds, chemical bonding and molecular interactions, chemical reactions, energy, gases, solutions, and nuclear chemistry.

Advanced Placement Chemistry (265)     2 credits Science

  • **(Double block class daily)**
  • Prerequisite(s): Junior or Senior status, Minimum grade of 93 for Biology and 88 for Biology Honors, recommendation of current science instructor, completion of Algebra II Honors, and minimum grade of 70 on pre-test (given in Biology Honors class)

This laboratory course is equivalent to a freshman level general chemistry class at a college or university and is therefore very fast paced. Students wishing to enter the medical or science fields are encouraged to consider taking this course.  This course uses a lot of algebra, and strong math skills are needed for success in this course. This course will require a strong desire for students to study and learn material outside of class.  The course includes laboratory time, lecture time, and group problem solving time.  Students who take the AP Chemistry course are strongly encouraged to take the exam.  Students cannot switch up to Advanced Placement from other levels of Chemistry once the school year has started.

What will you Learn?

Through a combination of individual and group problem solving, direct instruction, and laboratory investigations, students will understand:

  • The chemical elements are fundamental building materials of matter, and all matter can be understood in terms of arrangements of atoms. These atoms retain their identity in chemical reactions.
  • Chemical and physical properties of materials can be explained by the structure and the arrangement of atoms, ions, or molecules and the forces between them.
  • Changes in matter involve the rearrangement and/or reorganization of atoms and/or the transfer of electrons.
  • Rates of chemical reactions are determined by details of the molecular collisions.
  • The laws of thermodynamics describe the essential role of energy and explain and predict the direction of changes in matter.
  • Any bond or intermolecular attraction that can be formed can be broken. These two processes are in a dynamic competition, sensitive to initial conditions and external perturbations.

Human Physiology (244)    1/2 credit Science

  • Prerequisite(s): Senior status preferred or junior status with concurrent enrollment in Chemistry or Practical Chemistry and successful completion of Earth-Space Science and Biology or special permission of instructor.

This laboratory course is designed to acquaint students with the chemical and physical processes that control their bodies. The course is structured for students who want more detailed analysis of the functions of the human body beyond those already discussed in biology or health courses. Laboratory activities are used to emphasize the physiological and holistic relationships of the body.

Forensic Science (258)    1/2 credit Science

  • Prerequisite(s): Junior/Senior status and/or recommendation of current science instructor

This science laboratory course engages students in learning about various applications of science relating to crime scene investigation and forensic science

Through a combination of individual and group problem solving, direct instruction, and laboratory investigations, students will...

  • understand how various types of evidence can be analyzed and the limitations of the analysis
  • understand how and why forensic science has evolved over time
  • be able to analyze various types of crime scene evidence
  • be able to use deductive reasoning to determine if evidence matches certain individuals, samples or crime scenes.

Environmental Science (251)    1/2 credit Science

  • (Semester course)
  • Prerequisite(s):  Successful completion of Algebra I, and Algebra II, Earth-Space Science, Biology, Chemistry (or concurrent enrollment in Chemistry), and recommendation of current science instructor

This laboratory course’s goal is to provide students with the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world, to identify and analyze environmental problems, both natural and human-made, to evaluate the relative risks associated with these problems, and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing them.

Students must have the mathematical skills, including measurement, algebra, and trigonometry, to successfully complete the required lab exercises and assignments.

Advanced Placement Biology (225)    1 credit Science

  • Prerequisite(s): Junior or Senior status, successful completion or concurrent enrollment in Algebra II and recommendation of current science instructor

Description Advanced Placement Biology covers at the college level and offers students the opportunity to earn college credit by demonstrating biological knowledge, problem-solving skills, and scientific thinking on the AP Biology test.  During this course students will delve deeper into intricate biological details, move at an accelerated rate, while demonstrating independence completing reading and other assignments on time.  Students who take the AP Biology course are strongly encouraged to take the exam.

Advanced Placement Physics (252)    2 credits Science

  • **(Double block class daily)**
  • Prerequisite(s): Senior status, successful completion of Pre-Calculus, co-enrollment in Honors or AP Calculus, and recommendation of current science instructor
  • Approved NCAA course

This is an introductory, calculus based, physics program in two parts. The fall semester will be Mechanics, which will cover kinematics, Newton’s laws of motion, work and energy, momentum, circular motion and rotation and oscillations and gravitation. Students are required to take the AP Physics C (mechanics) exam in the spring. The spring semester will be Electricity and Magnetism, which will cover electrostatics, conductors and capacitors, electric circuits, magneto statics and electromagnetism. Students who take the AP Physics C (electricity and magnetism) course are strongly encouraged to take the exam. Laboratory work will emphasize design and analysis of experiments which explore the important physical concepts being studied at that time.
