The National Honor Society

The National Honor Society (NHS) is dedicated to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These four pillars have guided the national organization since its inception in 1921. Harwood Union's chapter was founded in 1996.

More than a million students are involved in NHS in all 50 states, US Territories, Canada, and around the world. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

To be considered for membership in the Harwood chapter, rising juniors and seniors must first meet an academic threshold based on their Cumulative Course Score Average. For the classes of 2022-2025, the number is 3.40. We are currently reviewing the Cumulative Course Score Average threshold to ensure that our membership criteria is proportional to the pattern of course scores at Harwood.  For applicants in the class of 2026 and beyond, the Cumulative Course Score threshold will be reset and the new number will be communicated by January of 2025.

Students who have achieved that score will be sent an invitation to apply in the fall of each school year.  As part of students’ applications, they must demonstrate their achievement in leadership, character and service. These applications are evaluated by the Faculty Council, composed of five faculty members representing academic departments and school counseling.

Students in NHS commit to meeting at least monthly to plan group service events, and are expected to complete both group and individual service hours.
