The National Honor Society

The National Honor Society (NHS) is dedicated to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These four pillars have guided the national organization since its inception in 1921. Harwood Union's chapter was founded in 1996.

More than a million students are involved in NHS in all 50 states, US Territories, Canada, and around the world. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service.

To be considered for membership in the Harwood chapter, beginning in the 2025-2026 school year, rising juniors and seniors must first meet the threshold for Latin Honors (cum laude - top 15%) based on their Cumulative Course Score Average from the end of the previous school year. Prior to the 2025-2026 school year, the threshold has been a CCSA of 3.40. The CCSA for the top 15% of each class will be communicated on this page each fall. Current members who may not meet the threshold in a future year will not be affected.

Students who have achieved that score will be sent an invitation to apply in the fall of each school year.  As part of students’ applications, they must demonstrate their achievement in leadership, character and service. These applications are evaluated by the Faculty Council, composed of five faculty members representing academic departments and school counseling.

Students in NHS commit to meeting at least monthly to plan group service events, and are expected to complete both group and individual service hours.
