Three Democracies 2019 Rhetorical Night

Three Democracies 2019 Rhetorical Night

Thursday, May 23rd

6:00-7:30 PM in the Harwood Library

“For the more an honorable and worthy study was used badly by the foolishness and wickedness of dull-minded and immoral men who brought danger to their cities, the more the better citizens should have studied and practiced ways to stop them from destroying the republic.”-Cicero

“Eloquence comes not by nature or from practice but by study and education.”- Cicero

The HUUSD community is invited to an evening of Rhetorical Speeches presented by the students in Katherine Cadwell’s and Adam Sargent’s 2018 - 2019 Three Democracies classes. For this assignment, students were asked to write and deliver a speech in which they demonstrate eloquence for an end that they consider to be virtuous. Their results were impressive, and we want to share them with you on this evening!

The evening’s agenda will be as follows:

  • 6:00 PM Arrive in the HUHS library- All students and parents--- plus friends and neighbors!
  • 6:10 PM - An Introduction to Cicero and his use of Rhetoric in pursuit of Virtue
  • 6:20 PM - Two speeches from students selected by their peers
  • 6:30 PM Break into small groups of students, parents, and friends to listen to speeches- rooms will be assigned
  • 6:30- 7:00 PM Speeches in small groups
  • 7:00 PM-7:30 Gather in the Library for reflection and refreshments

This gathering is mandatory for students; we hope you and your family members and friends can
join us in celebrating their achievements.
