Best Buddies

Faculty Advisors: Alison Watt, Jeff Ogden

NEW THIS YEAR: Partner’s Club and Best Buddies are merging and will be called Best Buddies. The missions of these two clubs are closely aligned. Best Buddies is a student-led volunteer club that creates one-to-one friendship opportunities for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Partner’s Club gives students, with or without disabilities, an opportunity to participate in unified sporting events (bowling, snowshoeing, and bocci). This program is mutually enriching by crossing the invisible line that often separates students with disabilities from those without. Moreover, the program provides opportunities for students to learn social and communication skills, while developing wonderful friendships. By joining Harwood’s Best Buddies chapter, students can make new friends; take part in unified sporting events; help to make the Harwood community more inclusive; and gain invaluable leadership experience. Because buddy friendships are a club focus, students who choose to be paired in a one-to-one friendship are making a full-year commitment.

Harwood Best Buddies will meet from 3:00-4:45 two Thursday’s a month after school throughout the school year. There will be no down time between unified sports. The first meeting will be on Thursday September 8. Students should plan to take the late bus home or be picked up by family. A full schedule (including unified sporting events) will be available at that meeting. Any student or family with questions should email co-directors Alison Watt ([email protected]) or Jeff Ogden ([email protected]).
